I know you’re the author and you’re in charge but stop trying to make fetch happen. I know the ending has Rin decide to fight Nezha and “burn his heart out of his chest” but come on you know that was meant to be a quote printed on a bookmark for fandom. I do not want to get on the Rinzha or Rintan train do not give me any more tickets to these trains, Rebecca.I didn’t even get a big messy downward spiral for her in this book she just meanders and passes out conveniently when important events happen and she wakes up after it’s over?asdklfja lsdkfj TDR feels less like a novel and more like the author retelling certain events with her own characters plus magic. In fact, most if not all elements of TDR can come across as that. She is little more than a mouthpiece for what the author wants to commentate on. Rin as a main character had so much potential after TPW and it was squandered in TDR only for it to be resuscitated last minute just in time for The Burning God. The readers who are already familiar with the historical events this book is inspired by, there’s not much new and you will already be able to predict how the course of TDR will go. TPW was at least polished, but TDR reads like a first draft with, in large part, little substance. As someone who liked The Poppy War (TPW), I was massively disappointed by TDR. I found The Dragon Republic (TDR) to be a drudgingly slow read. GOD THIS WAS A SLOG. Read partially through e-ARC and mostly through audiobook narrated by Emily Woo Zeller.
